One might say that Shirley Reid has a bit of obsession with the outside world. We're not talking about the world of streets and buildings, but the world of Mother Nature. For thirty years, she has been painting, drawing, filming and sculpting the creatures and scenes that inhabit the environs of her place and as a result has honed a style most pleasing to the eye.

Trout left As for her professional career, her efforts have led to many shows. In Vermont she has had exhibitions and sculptures at the Fleming Museum in Burlington, the Helen Day Art Center in Stowe, the Chaffee Art Center in Rutland, and multiple shows in many private galleries in Waitsfield, Woodstock, and one-woman shows at St. Michael's College, UVM, and the Pierson Library, Shelburne.

Trout right In the Caribbean, her work is represented at Harmony Hall Gallery in Antigua, St. John Artist Association Gallery on St. John, and Caribbean Spice Art Gallery on Tortola. She continues to show at invitational sculpture shows such as "Spirit of Place" in Huntington, Vermont, and the SculptureFest in Woodstock.

Shirley Reid is also famous for the "Charlotte Trout" which was, for many years, on display on Greenbush Road until it was sold to a private collector. Most recently she was creative director of the St. John Sun Times, an eight time ADDY award winning arts newspaper on St. John.

She and her family moved back to Vermont so their daughter could attend the Red Cedar School. Her husband, noted author, Tom Paine, teaches Creative Writing at Middlebury College. Private commissions are welcome. Please feel free to contact the artist.
